Are their any non-region-specific DVD players available nowadays? Do I have to buy a separate region 2 DVD player? *Can* I buy a region 2 DVD player in the U.S.?

His dry wit and straight delivery made him one of the funniest men I have ever heard, and I for one shall miss him. He has has me in hysterical laughter for more years than I care to remember. Truly a giant in both sields he'ss be remembered for: Comedy and Music.

I thought the show was hysterical, but I figured I'd only really like it if he had guests that I like, or at least that I know. But I continued to watch the show, and I've come to realize that it doesn't matter if I have absolutely no idea who any of the guests are, it's still hysterical. :) If you've never seen it before (and you have BBC America), you should really check it out.

Sybil to return to Fawlty Towers

Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales is to star at the reopening of the Torquay hotel which inspired the legendary series.
Scales, who played the long-suffering Sybil, is set to arrive in a replica of the Austin 1100 famously thrashed with a branch by her screen husband Basil.

The event on 18 September is to mark a refurbishment of the Hotel Gleneagles.

It will be the first time Scales has visited the hotel - which is a local landmark because of Fawlty Towers.

Hotel co-owner Brian Shone, said: "We want to make her arrival as memorable as possible and what better way than to have her arrive in the back of a red Austin 1100."

Basil's thrashing of his recalcitrant 1100 in the Gourmet Night episode once topped a poll of memorable motoring moments, beating the Italian Job's car chase.

Show creator John Cleese based the character of Basil Fawlty on Donald Sinclair, a former owner of the Hotel Gleneagles.

Eric Idle's suitcase

Cleese, who stayed at the hotel with the Monty Python team in 1971, described Mr Sinclair as "the most wonderfully rude man I have ever met".

Mr Sinclair, who died in 1981, is said to have thrown Eric Idle's suitcase out of the window "in case it contained a bomb" and complained about Terry Gilliam's table manners.

The actual hotel seen at the start and end of the series was the Woodburn Grange Country Club in Buckinghamshire, but that burned down in 1991.

The Gleneagles has become a popular tourist destination.

Mr Shone, said: "We get about eight or 10 coaches a day stopping outside.

"Some people just want to walk about inside.

"It is the spiritual home of Fawlty Towers."

Mr Shone keeps Fawlty Towers memorabilia inside the foyer of the hotel which, with its new boutique hotel look, is otherwise very different from the hotel in the series.

Fawlty Towers has proved to be one of the most enduring sitcoms in TV history.

Despite only running for 12 episodes, it regularly tops polls of favourite TV shows.

Lemur Species Named After John Cleese

ZURICH, Switzerland - Most people know him as the Minister for Silly Walks on "Monty Python" or as Q in James Bond films. But John Cleese will also go down in history for another reason: lemurs.

Researchers from the University of Zurich have named a newly discovered species of lemur — one of the most primitive and endangered primates in the world — after the British comedian in honor of his work with the animal.
The avahi cleesei, which weights less than two pounds and eats leaves, was discovered in Western Madagascar in 1990 by a team led by anthropologist Urs Thalmann and his colleague Thomas Geissman of Zurich University.

The name is a tribute to Cleese's promotion of the plight of lemurs in the movie "Fierce Creatures" and documentary "Operation Lemur with John Cleese," the university said in a statement. A lemur even appears next to Cleese on his Web site.

The lemur's long legs are the only physical attribute it shares with Cleese, Thalmann told New Scientist magazine. "Woolly lemurs can't really walk — but they do enjoy silly jumps," he said.

This show ran in the late 70's on London Weekend, we used to watch it and howl even though we had no kids, it was just the funniest show on TV at the time. I am currently cable-less, but I do see that BBC America has it listed on their website as a show that is not currently running - just not sure if it means that they've already run it or that they intend to. Oddly enough, Amazon.com.uk does show that they have Region 1 (USA/Canada) versions of this DVD available, which are shipped from the US/Canada, but it is nowhere to be found on the US Amazon site. In any case, I highly recommend this series and I am eagerly looking forward to seeing season 2 (and beyond - I read that season 3 will start airing in the UK sometime this fall).

Dear BC Tribe Members-

You may have heard about the Tsunami that hit SE Asia. While I am new to the tribe community, I feel strongly compelled to get the word out as my family and I have plans (at this time) to be in Thailand in 2 weeks. Had this disaster hit only 2 weeks later we could have been on the beach at Phuket when it hit. Please read further for more information on how to help...

"The strongest earthquake for 40 years has claimed several thousands lives across South Asia.

Tidal waves triggered by the quake struck across the region causing widespread destruction." - SKY NEWS

"The largest earthquake to hit the planet in 40 years struck at 6:58 a.m. (local time) on Dec. 26 off the western coast of Sumatra. About 44,000 people have been reported to be killed in nine countries, including India, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka, following massive tsunamis, with thousands washed out to sea." - WORLDVISION

People out there need our financial help, and they need it now. As of Wednesday 29th December 2004, the "Tsunami Death Toll" stands at 60,000+. That figure is thought to rise dramatically still as more bodies are recovered from this tragic natural disaster.

There are many charities and aid agencies which have already deployed teams out to the areas affected. But due to the massive impact that these Tsumani's have created, the lives of millions of people will be affected by disease, lack of food, and more importantly, lack of fresh water.

This is not a begging letter or email. So if you can't afford to give, please feel free to get the word out, so that others who may be able to donate.
Right now there are people in South East Asia who have lost everything.
£1, $1, 1EURO, etc, is better than nothing at all.

Please feel free to add links of any charity accepting donations for this cause.

The Command Post is a newsblog that is being continuously updated to contain information regarding this disaster. More importantly it contains up to date information about where you can donate.
