Does anyone know of a source for either Doctor in the House or High Life (with Alan Cumming) episodes? Amazon has a small set of the first season of DitH (six, I think), but that's it. And I can't find High Life anywhere at all. Any leads?

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Sun, July 24, 2005 - 10:00 PMI wish I knew. I've been dying for DitH on DVD for some time but I think the eps are only available on VHS presently. -

Mon, July 25, 2005 - 12:01 AMI'll happily take VHS if I can get them. Any idea where I might be able to get more than I already have? -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 12:11 AMThis is going way back, back.
Just noticed it was written by Bill Oddie, Grame Green, John Clesse and Barry Cryer.
I vaguely remember it being shown on a Sunday evening. -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 12:27 AMGraham Chapman as well.
I started watching the show when I was three years old. I grew up with these guys.
That probably explains a lot. :) -

Mon, July 25, 2005 - 10:11 AMActually, one of the episodes Cleese wrote laid the groundwork for what became Fawlty Towers.

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 10:13 AMEnrika - a company called BFS used to have the VHS but I'm not sure if they even have them anymore.
The only thing I could find online was one of the DitH movies from the 50's but that's only an import. -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:39 AMThanks for checking. I have the BFS eps. I'm just hoping to find more.
My local PBS station ran DitH eps regularly until I was at least 16, so I know they still exist.
But now that I come to think of it, that was over 20 years ago.
Ugh. Best not to think about it.
For a while, it seemed that it was at least as popular as Are You Being Served. I'm not sure what happened to it. It would be awfully nice if PBS would start showing them again. But I don't know how likely that is to happen.
Any idea how they decide which old Britcoms to show? -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 11:46 AMI hear ya. Our PBS station showed it like nobody's busines - I think as many as 3 times a day. Then, one day (about 20 yrs ago), they just stopped.
As for how they decide, probably it's a matter of which shows get the most response (aka money) during pledge breaks. -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Mon, July 25, 2005 - 7:03 PMIm sure that this thread is the most attention Doctor In The House has recieved over the last 25 years.
Of course if its your thing, then thats fine, although I dont think it would ever get a rerun back in the U.K. and I cant quite see what the attraction is, except to serve as a trip down Memory Lane. -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 8:53 AMSee, though, this just illustrates the unfairness of it all. Are You Being Served is all over the place, and no one even knows what Doctor in the House is anymore.
Why, I ask you, why?
Ah, the injustice.
Not that I have anything against Are You Being Served, mind you. I quite like it. But the humor is even more juvenile and blatant than DitH, and just as dated. There's a lot of very good humor in DitH, as long as you can get past the dated factor. All you have to do is look at the list of contributing writers to see its potential.
Let us DitH fans unite. Let us not see this beloved show go quietly into the night.
Whaddya say?
Or will we just need to content ourselves with Are You Being Served and be done with it? -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 9:46 AMAre You Being Served, The Benny Hill Show, They have both been banned from public broadcasting by Act Of Parliment, thankfully! -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 10:04 AMThat sounds like a joke, and I'm assuming that it is, but I can't tell.
I'm terribly gullible.
In any case, AYBS is exceedingly alive and well on this side of the pond. Or at least it was a couple of years ago when I had television. I honestly don't know how it's doing at the moment.
I'd happily see it replaced by DitH. I'd even get television again for that.
Now I'm probably going to get slammed by all the AYBS fans. :) Just remember, guys, I like that one, too. -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 10:07 AMBut on to High Life... Is BBC America showing that at all these days, or does anyone know if they plan to show it again? That's another thing that might convince me to get cable again. At least until I can complete my collection.

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 10:08 AMNo its true, both banned under Act Of Parliment, apparently banned under the Public Interests Act 401b/ 1998. -
-
Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 10:10 AMWha?
What Public Interest is served by doing that? Except maybe the interest of good taste? I didn't think that Parliment extended its jurisdiction into matters of taste. -
-
Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 10:15 AMExactly! Thank heavens for the Public Interests Act 401/b 1998 -

Re: Doctor in the House and High Life eps
Tue, July 26, 2005 - 11:04 AMOh yeah? Then why did UKTV Gold show an episode THIS MORNING about Mr Humphries being appointed editor of the Grace Bros in-house magazine?
