I'm new to this tribe and noticed that it's become a sort of ghost town. I'd love to strike up a discussion of your favorite older British Comedy.
Mine has got to be Keeping Up Appearances although I'm also a fan of One Foot In The Grave and Are You Being Served?.
How about you?

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Thu, September 15, 2005 - 11:11 AMOh, Where to start?
Not the 9 0'clock news was a classic with falling off your your chair with laughter moments in each episode, Good old 'Monty Python' has to be there together with 'Ripping Yarns', and Fawlty Towers. 'A bit of a do' was an absolute hoot as was 'Dinnerladies' writeen by the incomparable Victoria Wood and starring her and the hilarious Julie Walters. The Morcambe & Wise show is still hilarious and hasn't really dated, but then their humour was timeless.................. anyone who hasn't seen them preparing breakfast to the well known stripper tune has missed an absolute gem! I could go on, but won't! -

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Fri, September 16, 2005 - 10:16 AMI loved watching the Morcambe and Wise Christmas Specials as a child. In the 90s, I recorded many of their BBC shows on UK Gold (and still occasionally watch them). Even today, I think those Xmas shows would be regarded as an event, rather than just another programme. M&W even persuaded the then Prime Minister Harold Wilson to make a guest appearance on one show. My favourite sketch is the one with Mr. Andrew Preview.. sorry, I meant Andre Previn!

Sat, September 17, 2005 - 10:31 PMThose that have been listed so far are all great shows :) Morecombe and Wise was probably my favorite, although the 2 Ronnies was also excellent.

Re: Favorite older British Comedy? "
Wed, December 7, 2005 - 10:51 PMI started watching British Comedy with 'Monty Python' but it was the ‘Good Life’ aka ‘Good Neighbors’ in the states.
I likes “Chef” and “Solo”
"then again, i also go mad for a bit of black adder or red dwarf. "
Same here, both of these shows are awesome.

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Sat, September 17, 2005 - 8:29 AMI'm probably showing my age when I mention"Hancock's Half Hour" (which wasn't as good as the earlier radio version), "Steptoe and Son", "The Tellygoons" (which nobody but me seems to remember), "Not Only, But Also", "Till death Us Do Part" (which was probably the most controversial British comedy programme of the sixties).
Sadly, the BBC, in its wisdom, doesn't seem to have kept copies of many of these programmes. -

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Mon, September 19, 2005 - 8:27 AM'Eckie thump' still has me in hysterics, and their song 'Father Christmas do not touch me' ( Leaving off the word at the very end of the sentence each time they sing it until you're just left with 'Father'!) My boys think it's it hilarious, but I
I'm not sure they actually understand it!

Mon, September 26, 2005 - 8:25 AMDoes anyone remember High Spirits?
Set in a hospital - it's showing on Cable at the moment.
I used to love that.
Very dry. -

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 12:26 PMDon't remember that one, but it did remind me of one called 'Surgical Sprirts' which revolved around a particularly acid tongued sugeon played by Nicola McAuliffe.... very funny!
Oh, and 'Drop the dead donkey' -

Re: Favorite older British Comedy?
Tue, September 27, 2005 - 12:38 PMReading all of these replies just makes me want to be in England! Cursed all... I'll just have to convince my boyfriend to scrimp and save with me over the next year to visit. *sigh*
Has anyone revisited their old favorites?
I've found that when I attempted to watch Are You Being Served? again after years and years it just... wasn't... funny. Well, wasn't as funny as I remembered. Keeping Up Appearances still gives me giggles, but I find that I can relate more and more to those characters as I grow up. You know, I guess I should watch some more AYBS? now that I've worked in retail - may give me a different spin. -

Oh, man, I can't tell you how warm and fuzzy that makes me feel. :)
Now if we can just get the BBC to release all the episodes in a DVD boxed set...
Well, a girl can always dream, right?
