Re: Coupling
Wed, May 5, 2004 - 12:40 AMI watched the 1st 2 episodes of the US version. Pathetic after the first 5 minutes of the 1st one... I didn't laugh at any of the jokes that I laughed at in the UK version. I gave the 2nd episode a shot, but it sucked too. Didn't even bother to watch it after that.
I believe NBC (US) is going to try to duplicate The Office. I'm expecting that to bomb too.

Re: Coupling
Wed, May 5, 2004 - 3:46 PMi saw the webiste for the us version of coupling and it looked tragic....the cast was far too pretty and plastic (the UK jeff is just so gorgeous in a scruffy kind of way!)
i read about the us office in the paper here a couple of months ago....they were talking about getting brad pitt in the "david" role....pretty laughable....then they had a poll to see who people thought would make the best david (the office was big down here)....john cusack won out!
then i also read that the guy that played neil in the british series might be david in the us version....god help us all!! -

Re: Coupling
Thu, May 6, 2004 - 3:14 AMThanks Jeff. Are you THE Jeff?
I'll check out your pics.
My BF was kind enough to get the first 3 series for mr on DVD and now I want more - good to know they will be making more.
I remember seeing a documentary about how the US was going to remake it. They talked about how everyone was going to be good looking - and how less bad things would happen - because (as I mentioned in a previous post about The Office remake) the US audience (rather patronisingly I thought) can't deal with constant bad luck and unhappiness. Someone brought up on the program the point about how successful Seinfeld was.
The thing that makes British Comedy so successful is that we revel in others misfortune over here - We love it! -

Re: Coupling
Thu, May 6, 2004 - 4:09 PMbritish comedy has always been more bawdy and out there than american comedy....always tinged with irony....i kind of always had this theory that americans must need funny things to be clearly explained to them (i've never been there, i'm only comparing british to us shows)....i know that isn't the case for everyone in the us....but it must be some sort of norm.
the british....and the australian's too....have this talent for taking the piss out of each other....it's a much drier sense of humour....witty, rather than situational.
it seems like what the american market likes has to be instantly entertaining....but the british find the entertainment....does that make any sense?

Re: Coupling
Fri, May 7, 2004 - 5:36 AMI've added a picture of Jeff to the pics.
I think you just need to take a look at the Office thread to see the point highlighted re: situational tastes.
In the US the Office will focus on Tim & Dawn (which would seem to be aimed right for the US market) but in the UK the second series saw an upsurge in poularity, with some of the most famous scenes being reveled in ("The Brent Dance" being the most well known).
I can't ever imagine League of Gentleman EVER being bought in the States, it's too dark and cringeworthy, leaving a bad taste in your mouth (and a poorly feeling in your tummy). But I love it - I wonder if this gives me a typical 'British' sense of humour - or just reveals my sadistic masochistic side? -

Re: Coupling
Fri, May 28, 2004 - 10:17 PMgod how I hate when they take a good British Comedy and Americanize it! it didn't work with Men Behaving Badly, didn't work with Coupling, Trading Spaces is ANNOYING as hell, etc, etc. I can't imagine what they'll do with the Office! ugh.
anyway, having said that, I'm watching BBC America right now and there was an ad on just now for coupling....they're showing a marathon on Sunday (or was it Monday? oh shit), in preparation for new episodes! cool! love this show! -

Re: Coupling
Tue, June 8, 2004 - 12:31 PMWho Wants to be a Millionaire?, Ground Force, that other annoying game show that looks like it's filmed on the same set as Millionaire...all baaaaaaaaad! Then there are the knock-offs that aren't exact Americanized carbon copies of shows, just ripped off ideas- like that show several years back that was to be an American "Absolutely Fabulous"...it had Mary McDonnell in it as the 'Edina' character, a friend for her (the Patsy character) and another more conservative friend (hhmmm...a "Saffy" stand-in?) Anyway, it was dreadful...all they could do was drink and pop pills. I would have killed to see one of them walk out of the bathroom with a bunch of white powder falling out her nose like Patsy. -

Re: Coupling
Wed, June 23, 2004 - 2:34 AMJeff isn't in the lastest series - they have tried
to replace him with an inferior copy!
Also, I found out a work colleague snogged him and has
his phone number! -

Tue, July 12, 2005 - 3:07 PMI could see how he didn't want to be typecast. That's too bad. I guess there's no 5th season either.
